We are 2km outside ORGIVA, the bustling market town for the western Alpujarra, close to the Berber-style, white villages of the Poqueira, the Taha and Trevelez: the highest inhabited village in Spain, famed for its Serrano ham and river trout.

You can follow the paths of the ancient silk routes: walk, snow-shoe, horse-ride or parascend the mountains. From Capileira (in the Poqueira) or Trevelez you can climb to the top of Mulhacen: mainland Spain's highest mountain at nearly 3500 metres. You can relax in the sunshine, have a picnic by a river or waterfall, try the local tapas and wine, or shop for local crafts or produce.

The spa town of Lanjaron is just 10 minutes away by car - you can bathe in the curative waters in the balnearios, or, at various points in town, you can collect free mineral water, coming from the fresh water springs of the Sierra Nevada. In June the town comes alive for the festival of San Juan - water, water everywhere, and plenty to drink.

Take a trip to Granada and marvel at the Alhambra palace, take part in the Semana Santa (Easter) parades, come for the International Festival of Music and Dance or the Tango or Jazz festival, visit the ancient cobbled streets of the Albaicin and the gypsy quarter of Sacromonte.

Soak in the outdoor thermal pools in Alhama de Granada, walk along the tracks at the side of the gorge and swim in the freshwater lake nearby.
